Beauty Courses

In the UK there are 4,800 beauty salons and 36,000 hairdressing salons – 5,800 of which offer beauty therapy treatments (particularly those in hotels and leisure centres). There has been significant growth in the number of independent nail salons, spa facilities and beauty therapy salons offering an extended range of services.

This 12 month apprenticeship is designed for those who want to advance their role to a Beauty, Massage or Spa Therapist.

Depending on the pathway followed and level achieved, learners completing an apprenticeship will undertake roles such as: senior Beauty therapist, Spa Therapist, Electrolysist, Masseur/ Masseuse (Advanced Level), Holistic Therapist.

  • About the Course

    You will study:

    Mandatory units:

    • Provide body electrical treatments
    • Provide facial electrical treatments
    • Provide body massage treatments
    • Provide electrical epilation treatments
    • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
    • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities

    Optional units:

    • Hot stones massage
    You will also complete courses in:
    • Personal learning and thinking skills
    • Mathematics functional skills level 2
    • English functional skills level 2
    • Employment rights and responsibilities.

  • Entry Requirements

    NVQ or VTCT (VRQ) Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy and a good general education.

    For the advanced Apprenticeship programme you should be 16 years old or over and working in a salon for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

    Because the industry has high client expectations and relies on repeat business, importance is given to:

    • Appropriate personal presentation including clothing, hair and personal hygiene
    • Practical, organisational and social skills
    • Attention to detail and cleanliness
    • An amicable nature and good communication skills for dealing face to face with clients or speaking on the telephone
    • Willingness to work flexible hours/days as agreed in the employment contract
    • A high degree of dexterity and coordination

    Potential apprentices with a predisposition to skin conditions or allergies, such as occupational dermatitis, eczema or asthma, need to understand that some chemicals, liquids and aerosols used may have a significant effect on their health condition.

    Colour blindness would restrict opportunities in artificial colouring products and services, since makeup application and nail services require the ability to recognise tones, shades and changes in a range of colours.

  • Progression

    On successful completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship, it is possible to continue on to a Level 4 qualification for example in Physiology or complete a foundation degree. This qualification also opens up a wide range of career progression routes including salon owner, senior therapist, working for a production company as a technician, working on a cruise liner or in a spa.

  • Assessment Method

    To successfully complete the Apprenticeship, the following elements need to be achieved:

    Competence Qualification: VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General (QCF) - to achieve this qualification a minimum of 54 credits must be achieved. Some of these units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensue you meet the minimum national standards.

    Workskills: Edexcel Level 2 Award in Workskills for Effective Learning and Employment.

    Personal Learning and Thinking Skills: Evidence will be collected to show that the following skills have been acquired:

    • Creative thinking
    • Independent enquiry
    • Reflective learning
    • Self-management
    • Teamwork
    • Effective participation.

    Transferable skills qualifications

    • Mathematics Functional Skills Level 2
    • English Functional Skills Level 2

    Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) The ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) programme is now covered by the online e-learning found on the Instructus website.
