Higher National Diploma in Business is designed provide the essential subject knowledge needed to progress successfully into work or further study at degree level (Level 6). About the Course
This is a one/two year course. In year one students undertake a substantial core of learning in the Higher National Certificate (Level 4) and build on this in the Higher National Diploma (Level 5) in year two, with optional units linked to Human Resource Management.
Students successfully completing the Higher National Certificate will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of business. They will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately and they will have the qualities needed for employment in a managerial or supervisory role. They will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, will be capable of taking independent initiatives and be equipped with organisational competence and problem-solving strategies.
- Unit 1: Business Environment (15 credits)
- Unit 2: Managing Financial Resources and Decisions (15 credits)
- Unit 3: Organisations and Behaviour (15 credits)
- Unit 4: Marketing Principles (15 credits)
The college will then select further units from a list of options to make up the remaining 60 credits.
In year two (Level 5) students are offered six specialist pathways designed to support progression into relevant occupational areas or on to degree level study. These pathways are linked to Professional Body standards (where appropriate) and can provide professional status and progression to direct employment.
The Level 5 Higher National Diploma offers a further set of mandatory and optional units. The optional units will be selected by the centre from a specialist pathway (Human Resource Management).

Specialist Pathway: Human Resource Management (60 credits)
- Unit 21: Human Resource Management (15 credits)
- Unit 22 Managing Human Resources (15 credits)
- Unit 23: Human Resources Development (15 credits)
- Unit 24: Employee Relations (15 credits)
There is also a non-specialist 'General Business' pathway, which allows students to complete a Level 5 Higher National Diploma without committing to a particular professional specialism. Higher National Diploma graduates will have developed a sound understanding of the principles in their field of study and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. They will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems.
These qualifications have also been approved by the following professional bodies as suitable qualifications for learners wanting to progress onto their approved courses at the appropriate level. The professional bodies include:
A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Business or other related Level 3 qualification
A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent and /or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as maths and English
An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution
Related work experience
An international equivalent of the above.
Upon successful completion students can progress into further study (degree at Level 6) or to the world of work.
The assessment of BTEC Higher National qualifications is criterion-referenced and work submitted by students will be assessed against learning outcomes and assessment criteria. All units will be individually graded as 'pass', 'merit' or 'distinction'.
