Health and Care Courses

This is the sole apprenticeship framework for people employed in delivering adult social care in England. This framework covers the health and social care sectors which include: the National Health Service, private providers, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

In social care this framework provides a suitable way to meet the development and qualification needs of a variety of roles and job titles, including care workers, community, support and outreach workers, personal assistance, domiciliary care workers, supervisors and senior care workers. This qualification is suitable for existing staff who don't already have a qualification and wish to progress within their organisation.

  • About the Course

    You will study:

    Mandatory Units:

    • Promote communication in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
    • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
    • Promote equality and inclusion in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
    • Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
    • Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
    • The role of the health and social-care worker
    • Promote person-centred approaches in health and social care
    • Promote and implement health and safety in health and social care
    • Promote good practice in handling information in health and social care settings.

    • Provide support to manage pain and discomfort, to continue recommended therapy, to maintain and develop skills

    • Support individuals in their day to day life and work in partnership with their family
    • Obtain venous blood samples

    You will also complete courses in:
    • Personal learning and thinking skills
    • Mathematics functional skills level 2
    • English functional skills level 2
    • Employment rights and responsibilities.
  • Entry Requirements

    For the Advanced Apprenticeship programme, candidates should be 16 years old or over and must have been an EU Resident for three years or more. Qualifications such as English and maths are desirable and candidates should be educated to Level 2. Apprentices need to be working over 30 hours per week in the health and care environment.

  • Progression

    On successful completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship, it is possible to progress to further learning and gain HND or Foundation degree qualifications. As a qualified care worker, employment opportunities include care workers, personal assistants, domiciliary care workers, community, support and outreach workers, supervisors, senior care workers in adult social care, care home management.

  • Assessment Method

    To successfully complete the Apprenticeship, the following elements need to be achieved:

    Competence Qualification: VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Health and Care (QCF) - to achieve this qualification a minimum of 58 credits must be achieved. Some of these units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensue you meet the minimum national standards.

    Workskills: Edexcel Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care.

    Personal Learning and Thinking Skills: Evidence will be collected to show that the following skills have been acquired:

    • Self-management
    • Teamwork
    • Effective participation.

    Transferable skills qualifications

    • Mathematics Functional Skills Level 2
    • English Functional Skills Level 2

    Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) The ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) programme is now covered by the online e-learning found on the Instructus website.
