The Advanced Apprenticeship in Health (Maternity and Paediatric Support) lasts 18-24 months and provides you with the skills and knowledge required to become competent in supporting Maternity and Paediatric Professionals. Healthcare support workers, healthcare assistants, maternity support workers or paediatric support workers provide vital assistance to healthcare professionals in diagnosing, treating and caring for patients. They work in a variety of settings, depending upon their role, including a specific hospital department, unit or clinic (e.g. paediatric, labour, maternity, neonatal, postnatal), a community clinic or health centre, patients' homes, a community delivery suite, a GP clinic.

Apprentices are employed in various roles working alongside Maternity and Paediatric Professionals. Healthcare support workers, healthcare assistants, maternity support workers or paediatric support workers accessing this framework will work alongside health professionals such as doctors, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals. They will be working with mothers and babies and/or children and young people. Their role may require them to work closely with professionals from other agencies too e.g. social services, housing etc.

They work under the guidance and supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. The role can be very varied depending upon the area in which the person is employed.

Clinical duties may include: generally assisting with patients' overall comfort and wellbeing, monitoring patients' conditions and taking physiological measurements, helping people to mobilise, supporting people to meet basic care needs such as washing and dressing, eating and drinking, going to the toilet, bed making, administrative tasks, stock control, preparing for and clearing up after sessions.

    Mandatory Units:

    • Promote communication in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
    • Promote equality and inclusion in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
    • Promote and implement health and safety in health and social care
    • The role of the health and social care worker.
    • Promote good practice in handling information in health and social care settings
    • Causes and spread of infection
    • Cleaning, decontamination and waste management
    • Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
    Optional units dependant on job role and could include:
    • Support parents/carers and those in a parental role to care for babies during their first year
    • Develop and agree individualised care plans for babies and families
    • Provide advice and information to enable parents to promote the health and well-being of their newborn babies
    • Care for the physical and nutritional needs of babies and young children
    • Care for a newly born baby when the mother is unable to do so
    • Support parents/carers to interact with and care for their newborn baby
    • Undertake urethral catheterisation processes
    • Carry out personal hygiene for individuals unable to care for themselves
    • Undertake treatments and dressings of lesions and wounds
    • Undertake physiological measurements
    • Obtain and test capillary blood samples
    • Obtain venous blood samples
    • Obtain a client history
    • Prepare individuals for healthcare activities
    • Support individuals undergoing healthcare activities
    • Assist the practitioner to carry out health care activities
    • Inform an individual of discharge arrangements
    • Contribute to effective multidisciplinary team working
    You will also complete courses in:
    • Personal learning and thinking skills
    • Mathematics functional skills level 2
    • English functional skills level 2
    • Employment rights and responsibilities.
  • Entry Requirements

    For the Advanced Apprenticeship programme, you should be 16 years or older, working at least 30 hours per week in a health and social care setting.

    Previous qualifications in care are not required but you will need to have basic literacy and numeracy ( Level 1 or above).

    Before commencing the apprenticeship, it will be necessary to undertake a criminal record check through the Disclosure and Barring Service as you may be working with children, young people and/or vulnerable adults.

  • Progression

    These are rewarding support roles with a direct impact on patient experience. Many apprentices complete their apprenticeships and continue to work as with delegated responsibility for a range of clinical tasks. They may also supervise other team members.

    A Higher Apprenticeship in Health (Assistant Practitioner) is available which an apprentice may proceed onto as they progress in their career if they are able to meet the employment and academic requirements. This will enable them to practice as an Assistant Practitioner.

    To become a qualified Health Professional (eg Nurse, Midwife, Allied Health Practitioner) apprentices would have to progress from their apprenticeship to undertake a specific qualification, often a 3-year university Degree, which, on completion, would enable them to register as a professional. To do this, individuals would have to meet the specific entry qualifications as outlined by their chosen Higher Education Provider.

  • Assessment Method

    To successfully complete the Apprenticeship, the following elements need to be achieved:

    Competence Qualification:

    City & Guilds level 3 Diploma Health (Maternity and Paediatric Support). Some of these units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure you meet the minimum national standards.

    Personal Learning and Thinking Skills: Evidence will be collected to show that the following skills have been acquired:

    • Reflective learning
    • Self-management
    • Teamwork
    • Effective participation.

    Transferable skills qualifications

    • Mathematics Functional Skills Level 2
    • English Functional Skills Level 2

    Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
    The ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) programme is now covered by the online e-learning found on the Instructus website.
