Health and Care Courses

This 24 month Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management is a level 5 Higher Apprenticeship framework for those working as Adults' Residential Managers, Adults' Managers and Adults' Advanced Practitioners in Adult Social Care or as a Manager of Specialist Adult Social Care Services or Business Development Manager in adult social care only.

Higher Apprentices will be working as managers of staff and/or services in general residential and non-residential settings; as advanced practitioners with a high level of knowledge of care provision activities or a specific specialism; as managers of specialist services with a specialist knowledge of particular adult social care provision and requirements, as a Business Development Manager starting and growing a new business and/or developing an existing business and/or supporting an employer to achieve any of these objectives.

  • About the Course

    For pathway 4978-54 (Adult's Residential Management), you will study:

    Mandatory units

    • Use and develop systems that promote communication
    • Promote professional development
    • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
    • Develop health and safety and risk management policies, procedures and practice in health and social care or children and young people's settings
    • Work in partnership in health and social care or children and young people's settings
    • Lead and manage a team within a health and social care or children and young people's setting
    • Develop professional supervision practice in health and social care or children and young people's settings
    • Manage health and social care practice to ensure positive outcomes for individuals
    • Safeguarding and protection of vulnerable adults
    • Lead and manage group living for adults
    • Understand safeguarding of children and young people (for those working in the adult sector)
    • Lead person-centred practice
    • Undertake a research project within services for health and social care or children and young people

    For pathway 4978-55 (Adult's management) and 4978-56 (Adult's Advanced Practice), you will study:

    • Use and develop systems that promote communication
    • Promote professional development
    • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
    • Develop health and safety and risk management policies, procedures and practice in health and social care or children and young people's settings
    • Work in partnership in health and social care or children and young people's settings
    • Lead and manage a team within a health and social care or children and young people's setting
    • Develop professional supervision practice in health and social care or children and young people's settings
    • Manage health and social care practice to ensure positive outcomes for individuals
    • Safeguarding and protection of vulnerable adult
    • Understand safeguarding of children and young people (for those working in the adult sector)
    • Lead person-centred practice
    • Assess the individual in a health and social care setting
    • Undertake a research project within services for health and social care or children and young people
    You will also complete courses in:
    • Personal learning and thinking skills
    • Mathematics functional skills level 2
    • English functional skills level 2
    • Employment rights and responsibilities.
  • Entry Requirements

    This qualification is for those already working in the social care sector Individuals must work in job roles which are appropriate for the framework and which will allow them to gather the evidence necessary for the qualifications and components which form a part of the framework. You might be an assistant or deputy manager, or a manager who has not yet achieved a recognised vocational qualification at this level working at least 30 hours a week.

    You will need to have basic literacy and numeracy ( Level 1 or above).

    Before commencing the apprenticeship, it will be necessary to undertake a criminal record check through the Disclosure and Barring Service as you may be working with children, young people and/or vulnerable adults.

  • Progression

    The Higher Apprenticeship offers career progression routes into more senior roles and further academic study at university.

    Progression to other specific job roles could include Care manager, Officer in charge/registered manager, Day Service manager.

  • Assessment Method

    To successfully complete the Apprenticeship, the following elements need to be achieved:

    Competence Qualification:

    City & Guilds level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services (Pathway 1 General Adult Social Care). Some of the units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure you meet the minimum national standards.

    Personal Learning and Thinking Skills: Evidence will be collected to show that the following skills have been acquired:

    • Independent enquiry
    • Reflective learning
    • Self-management
    • Teamwork
    • Effective participation.

    Transferable skills qualifications

    • Mathematics Functional Skills Level 2
    • English Functional Skills Level 2

    Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
    The ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) programme is now covered by the online e-learning found on the Instructus website.
