This course is designed to develop you as a film maker. You will learn vast amount skills that will enable you to consider a career in the TV and film industry. You will complete a wide variety of creative projects which will allow you the opportunity to gain skills that are necessary for anyone working in the industry.

1st year projects will include:

·         Video Editing

·         Multi-Camera Studio Production

·         Music Video Production

·         Film Studies

·         Final Major Project

·         You will also learn important communication skills, methods of researching and pre-production techniques to help plan your video projects.


2nd year projects will include

·         Documentary

·         Portfolio Development

·         Scriptwriting

·         Final Major Project

·         You will also be deciding your next steps after leaving the course, as well as developing skills in pitching ideas and working with clients. 

We use the latest industry standard kit, including Davinci Resolve and Creative Cloud 2020. Students film on a range of DSLR cameras and have access to our kit room, which is regularly updated with new filmmaking kit. Our state-of-the-art greenscreen and live-TV studio allows students to work in a range of industry environments and job roles, to best prepare them for the job gaps in the media marketplace. 

We are specifically focussed on entry routes to employment, and students work to create a professional media portfolio backed up with a range of work experience. We have initiated educational partnerships with organisations including BAFTA, the British Film Institute and National Theatre Live, and as recently as this year our students worked with the team behind the John Lewis Christmas adverts and with Hollywood actor James McAvoy.

    First Year:

    ·         Critical and contextual awareness

    ·         Investigating audio production

    ·         Investigating visual production

    ·         Investigating interactive production

    ·         Developing a creative media production

    Second Year:

    ·         Characteristics and contexts in creative media

    ·         Engaging with an audience

    ·         Preparing for progression

    ·         Specialist study

    ·         Extended project in creative media production.

    4 GCSEs At Grades A-C/9-4 Or Level 2 Qualification With Merit Or Distinction
  • Progression

    Your study options include the HND in Creative Media Production here at West Thames College. Or at University, a range of Honours level degrees across design, production, media and film and TV production. Possible careers include film, television and a wide range of media-related employment. Past students from this course have gone on to study on the top higher-education courses at universities including Westminster University, Arts University Bournemouth and the University of Salford, or into apprenticeships at companies including Sky and Google.

  • Assessment Method

    There are no exams on the course and you will be marked on your production skills at various points throughout your studies. Your engagement and attendance are required across the year in order to get the most from the programme. This model allows you to explore different ways of working to discover your creative voice. We have an excellent record of supporting students who may have different access requirements to achieve highly on this course.
