Teacher Training Courses

The Advanced Level Apprenticeship is designed for learning support staff with a working role which requires competence in a specialist area and/or across a varied range of responsibilities. You will be working under the direction of a teacher who has overall responsibiity for teaching and learning in the classroom. You will contribute to planning, implementing and evaluating learning activities and will work alongside the teacher to support whole class activities, as well as working on your own with individual, or groups of, pupils. Job titles may include teaching assistant, classroom assistant or learning support assistant.

  • About the Course

    To achieve the diploma, apprentices must achieve a minimum 44 credits from mandatory and optional units.

    You will study:

    Mandatory Units:

    • Communication and professional relationship with children, young people and adults
    • Schools as organisations
    • Support learning activities
    • Promote children and young people's positive behaviour
    • Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
    • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
    • Support assessment for learning
    • Engage in personal development in health, socal care or children's and young people's settings
    • Support children and young people's health and safety
    • Understand children and young person development
    • Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing or children and young people
    Optional Units include units linked to:
    • Supporting learning
    • English as an additional language
    • Special Educational Needs
    • Providing pastoral support
    • The wider work of the school
    • Working with colleagues
    • You will also complete courses in:
      • Personal learning and thinking skills
      • Mathematics functional skills level 2
      • English functional skills level 2
      • ICT level 2
      • Employment rights and responsibilities.
  • Entry Requirements

    You must be aged 19 or above, employed and working a minimum of 30 hours or more and not hold a Degree. Good literacy and numeracy skills are desirable but can be delivered as part of the apprenticeship.

  • Progression

    The Framework will benefit apprentices by offering opportunities for them to progress as teaching assistants and higher level teaching assistants. It can also offer progression into a wider range of related roles and occupations within primary, special and secondary schools, as well as to higher level qualifications such as Foundation Degrees or Level 4 qualifications in a relevant area.

  • Assessment Method

    You will spend one evening a week at the college, learning about the key principles of supporting teaching and learning in schools. You will be assessed through written assignments and observed and assessed in the workplace.
