Teacher Training Courses

This course is applicable to learning support staff whose role requires competence across a range of responsibilities. The frameworks provide training for the roles of teaching, classroom and learning support assistant. The apprenticeship will enable you to build on your knowledge and expertise in supporting learning.

  • About the Course
    Learning Support practitioners contribute to the provision of learning opportunities that promote the achievement and progression of learners by:
    • Providing learning support for individuals and/or groups
    • Working with others to provide learning support
    • Promoting learner independence and self-determination
    • Promoting inclusion and participation.

    Apprentices must achieve a minimum 45 credits from mandatory and optional units.

    You will study:

    Mandatory Units:

    • Learning support in lifelong learning contexts
    • Principles of learning support
    • Supporting learning
    Optional Units (A):
    • Preparing to support learning
    Optional Units (B):
    • Inclusive approaches to providing information
    • Skills check and signposting for English, maths and ICT needs
    • Organisational approaches to meeting English, maths and ICT learning needs
    • English, maths and ICT needs for life, learning and work
    • Equality and diversity
    • Practice based investigation
    • Supporting learners in an area of specialism
    • Preparing for the mentoring role
    • Understanding and managing behaviours in a learning environment
    You will also complete courses in:
    • Personal learning and thinking skills
    • Mathematics functional skills level 2
    • English functional skills level 2
    • ICT level 2
    • Employment rights and responsibilities.
  • Entry Requirements

    You must be aged 19 or above, employed and working a minimum of 30 hours or more and not hold a Degree. Good literacy and numeracy skills are desirable but can be delivered as part of the apprenticeship.

  • Progression

    The Framework will benefit apprentices by offering opportunities for them to progress within learning support. It can also offer progression into a wider range of related roles and occupations, as well as to higher level qualifications such as the Diploma in Education and Training.

  • Assessment Method

    You will spend one evening a week at the college, learning about the key principles of learning and supporting learning. You will be assessed through written assignments and observed and assessed in the workplace.
