Higher National Diploma in International Travel and Tourism Management (Aviation) is designed provide the essential subject knowledge needed to progress successfully into work or further study at degree level (Level 6). Students undertake a substantial core of learning in the Higher National Diploma, with mandatory and optional units linked to Aviation Operations

  • About the Course

    This is a two year course. This course represents the latest in professional standards and provides opportunities for students to develop specific behaviours for work. At the same time this course is intended to keep doors open for future study by developing higher education skills such as the ability to research.

    • Unit 1: The Contemporary Travel and Tourism Industry (15 credits)
    • Unit 2: Managing the Customer Experience (15 credits)
    • Unit 3: Professional Identity and Practice (15 credits)
    • Unit 4: The Travel and Tourism Business Toolkit (15 credits)
    • Unit 5: Leadership and Management for Service Industries (15 credits)

    Specialist Pathway: Aviation at Level 5 (60 credits)

    • Unit 21: Airline Operations Management (15 credits)
    • Unit 22: Airport Operations Management (15 credits)
    • Unit 23: Strategic Planning for Air Transport (15 credits)

    The objectives of this course are to equip students with specific travel and tourism skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global travel and tourism environment. In addition to this we also aim to provide insight and understanding into the diversity of roles within the travel and tourism sector, recognising the importance of collaboration at all levels.

    These qualifications have also been approved by the following professional bodies as suitable qualifications for learners wanting to progress onto their approved courses at the appropriate level. The professional bodies include:

    • Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality

  • Entry Requirements

    A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Aviation/Travel and Tourism or other related Level 3 qualification. Grade of DMM.

    A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent and /or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as Maths and English.

    An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution.

    Related work experience.

    An international equivalent of the above.

  • Progression

    Upon successful completion students can progress into further study (degree at Level 6) or to the world of work.

  • Assessment Method

    The assessment of BTEC Higher National qualifications is criterion-referenced and work submitted by students will be assessed against learning outcomes and assessment criteria. All units will be individually graded as 'pass', 'merit' or 'distinction'.
