Financial Support

We may be able to offer you support in paying for any course-related expenses if you can demonstrate financial hardship. Please see our booklet, Student Guide to Financial Support for more details.

For Higher Education [HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree - i.e. university level qualifications at Level 4 and higher.] students check: Financial Support for HE Students.


Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

If you are aged 16–18 years, you can get up to £30* a week when you study full-time [Full-time courses consist of 12-16 hours study per week. International students on full-time courses must study a minimum of 15 hours per week.] at West Thames College – providing you attend your lessons and do all your coursework and your annual family income is less than £30,000*.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)

You could get £30* a week on top of what you are already earning to help you with your studies. To qualify for the ALG you should:

  • Be over 19 years and enrolling for your first Level 2 or Level 3 course.
  • Have a household annual income of less than £30,000* a year
  • Be studying at least 12 hours a week
  • Not be in receipt of any 'out of work' benefits (e.g. JSA, income support) or training allowances.

Career Development Loans (CDL)

This is the same as a bank loan, but you do not start paying it back until you have finished your course. You can apply for a CDL if your course counts as vocational training and lasts for 2 years.
 

Free and Discounted Travel

If you are aged 16 or 17 years, you are studying in full-time [Full-time courses consist of 12-16 hours study per week. International students on full-time courses must study a minimum of 15 hours per week.] education and you live in London, you can apply for an Oyster photocard to get free travel on buses and trams. Get your application form from the post office.

Students over 18, who are studying over 15 hours per week, can apply for a student Oyster photocard to get 30% off travelcards and bus passes. See www.tfl.gov.uk for further information or speak to our Registry department for an application form.
