Entry Requirements

Each course has its own entry requirements. These depend on the level of the course, the type of course, your status and your previous experience.

The entry requirements are stated on individual course factsheets on this website. As a guide, the entry requirements for each level of course are set out below. However, please note: this is only a rough guide as many courses have their own, different entry requirements. Please check the individual factsheets for further details.

Entry Level Courses

Qualifications offered: BTEC Skills for Working Life, ESOL [English for speakers of other languages] Skills for Life.

Entry requirements: None - just an interest in the subject.


Level 1 - Introductory Courses

Qualifications offered: BTEC Level 1 Award or Certificate, NVQ or VRQ Level 1, City and Guilds, IMI Level 1, Destinations, 14-19 Foundation Diploma.

Entry requirements: None - just an interest in the subject, or an Entry Level qualification.


Level 2 - Intermediate Courses

Qualifications offered: BTEC Level 2 Certificate or Diploma, NVQ or VRQ Level 2, City and Guilds, IMI Level 2.

Entry requirements: At least 2 GCSEs at grades A* - D, successful completion of a Level 1 qualification or relevant experience (for mature applicants).


Level 3 - Advanced Courses

Qualifications offered: A Levels, Access to Higher Education [HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree - i.e. university level qualifications at Level 4 and higher.], BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, NVQ Level 3.

Entry requirements: At least 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C (may need to be in specific subjects), BTEC Level 2/First Diploma (in a relevant subject with merit), NVQ Level 2 or equivalent Level 2 qualification, or relevant experience (for mature applicants). Students on art and design, creative or performance-related courses may also need to show a portfolio of work or attend an audition.


Level 4-5 - Higher Education [HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree - i.e. university level qualifications at Level 4 and higher.], Year 1 and 2

Qualifications offered: BTEC Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degrees.

Entry requirements: At least one A Level, relevant Access to Higher Education course, relevant BTEC National Diploma or equivalent Level 3 qualification, or a significant level of relevant experience for mature candidates. Students applying for creative or performance-related courses will be required to show a portfolio of their work and/or do an audition.


Level 6: Higher Education [HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree - i.e. university level qualifications at Level 4 and higher.], Year 3

Qualifications offered: BA (Hons) top-up Degree.

Entry requirements: Satisfactory completion of a relevant HND or Foundation Degree. You may also need to show a portfolio of your work.


Age restrictions

Most courses are suitable for students of all ages providing the entry requirements have been met. However, sometimes an awarding body may set a minimum age requirement for a course or, if a programme is government-funded, funding may only be available for students within a specific age range. Places on these courses may be available to other students if they meet the entry requirements, but these students may be required to pay the full cost of the course.
