West Thames College London

AS Level Further Mathematics

AS Level Further Mathematics provides an introduction to concepts such as complex numbers and matrices. It includes decision mathematics, a very popular subject because of its applications to computer science, and mechanics, including the applications of maths in physics-type situations. Topics such as collisions and centre of mass are dealt with using mathematical techniques.

AS Level Further Mathematics is part of The Sciences Pathway, which also includes Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Psychology and Physics. You will choose 4 AS Level subjects from this pathway in your first year, and will continue with 3 A2 Level subjects in your second year.

Who is this course for?

This course is available in the second year for students who are studying A Level Mathematics. The course builds on the techniques learnt in AS Mathematics and provides an introduction to new concepts such as complex numbers and matrices. The applications to mathematics are also studied in the form of mechanics and decision maths. Further Mathematics is greatly valued by many universities and is highly recommended for admission to courses in mathematics, physics, finance, business, engineering and computer science.

You can find out more about the course by talking to your mathematics teachers or visiting the Edexcel website (www.edexcel.org.uk).

Entry requirements
Candidates for AS Further Mathematics are expected to have already obtained AS Maths and to be concurrently studying A2 Mathematics. The minimum entry requirement is AS Mathematics at grade B.
About the course

In addition to the three A2 units (Core Maths C3 and C4 and Mechanics M1), you will study three further mathematics units:

  • AS Further Maths Unit Edexcel (FP1 6667): Series, complex numbers, numerical solutions of equations, coordinate systems (conic sections), matrix algebra, proof by induction
  • AS Further Maths Unit Edexcel (D1 6689): Algorithms; algorithms on graphs; the route inspection problem; critical path analysis; linear programming; matchings
  • AS Further Maths Unit Edexcel (M2 6678): Kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane; centres of mass; work and energy; collisions; statics of rigid bodies.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed via external examinations at the end of each academic year. Each unit is tested by a 1.5 hour written examination. A graphics calculator may be used.
Where next?

Further Mathematics is a much sought-after qualification for entry to higher education in subjects such as economics, medicine, architecture, engineering, accountancy, teaching and physics. It will put you in an excellent position if you wish to study mathematics or a subject with a very high mathematical content at university.

“I absolutely love Science, so the A Level Science Pathway was the perfect route for me. The laboratories here are unbelievable and the topics are really interesting, especially neurology which is fascinating. I hope to study for a PhD in Biology and know that West Thames College will help towards making that happen."
