Apprenticeship in Food Preparation and Cooking - NVQ Level 2/3

This apprenticeship is for people already working or looking for work in the catering industry. It gives you the opportunity to earn money as you train, gain a nationally recognised qualification, and improve your career prospects. You will be assessed on and off the job and training is free - there's usually no cost to you or your employer

Who is This Course For?
Those wishing to progress their career in the catering industry.
Entry Requirements
You should be 16-24 years old and must have substantial practical experience working in an appropriate environment (subject to the lecturer’s approval) plus Key Skills Level 1 or GCSEs at grade D or above in both English and Maths. Other qualifications may be considered.
About the course

This advanced course is based at the Feltham Skills Centre where you will work in the kitchens, leading a team of other students, preparing food for staff, students and visitors. You will learn higher level skills required to work in a catering environment.

You will have the opportunity to work on the preparation and cooking of complex dishes. You will also study kitchen management, including:

  • Menu planning
  • Food art
  • Product development
  • Staff organisation
  • Training and team development
  • Budget control.

You will also gain qualifications in food hygiene and health and safety, which are required for work in the catering industry.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through observation at college and in the workplace, a portfolio and written assignments.

To gain a full apprenticeship qualification, you need to achieve an NVQ Level 2, a Key Skills qualification and usually a Technical Certificate. This usually takes at least 1 year to complete.

Where next?
You may wish to go on to higher level study, such as a specialist HND or degree programme.
