Photography - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

This two-year course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and offers you the opportunity to carry out introductory work in art and design, specialising in photography in the second year. You will work in the college's new darkroom and media suite, do studio and location photography, get involved in photographic styling and developing sets, and learn to manipulate images with computers and produce stop motion animation.

Timetable: This is a full time programme of study of under 16 hours per week. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

*HF+* (for one year of study) including tuition and exam fees.

The course may be free if you are:

  • aged under 19
  • aged 19-23 and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification
  • aged 19-24 and have Additional Learning Support needs over £6,000.

If you are 19-23 and already have a Level 3 qualification, you will pay 50% of the course fees plus registration and exam fees.

If you are over 24 years you may be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.

Who is this course for?
Advanced students who want to develop their photographic skills and go on to higher education or a career in photography.
Entry requirements
4 GCSEs at grades A*-C or a merit or distinction in a relevant subject at Level 2 with functional skills in English and maths. About the course

You will study core units in the first year:

  • Visual recording
  • Materials, techniques and processes
  • Ideas and concepts
  • Contextual influences
  • Communication through art and design.

In the second year you will study units such as:

  • Photographic media, techniques and technology
  • Lens-based image making
  • Studio photography
  • Location photography
  • Darkroom practice
  • Image manipulation using computer applications
  • Stop motion animation production
  • Professional practice in art and design.

This course consists of the 90-credit Diploma in Year 1 followed by the Extended Diploma in Year 2.

Additional opportunities
You will exhibit your work during Creative Arts Week, visit art exhibitions and museums, organise photo shoots, get involved in photographic styling and choosing locations, develop sets and work as part of a team.
How will I be assessed?
We encourage your active involvement in the assessment process, which is continuous throughout the year and culminates in a final major project.
Where next?
BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, HND or BA (Hons) degree at university, or relevant employment.
