Art and Design - Level 1 BTEC Award (formerly Introductory Certificate)
This course is primarily for 16 to 18 year olds with an interest in art and design. It will run for 11 weeks from January to Easter, and then again for a second group of students from Easter to the end of June: 4 days per week. If successful you will achieve the Level 1 BTEC Award (formerly Introductory Certificate) in Art, Design and Media.

- Who is This Course For?
- Those with an interest in art and design who wish to work towards a qualification in this subject.
- Entry Requirements
- There are no formal qualifications however you will need to have a genuine interest in art and design. This will be assessed during a college interview where you will be given the opportunity to ask questions about the course.
- About the course
There will be a mixture of practical sessions and classroom based lessons, with units in:
- Explore Visual Language in Art, Design and Media
- Explore Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art, Design and Media
- Introduction to 3D Design Crafts.
You will have a weekly tutorial and you will develop your skills in communications and numeracy through Skills Development classes.
- Additional Opportunities
- The college has extensive specialist facilities in art and design. We hope to organise trips to galleries, museums and exhibitions to widen your understanding of the industry.
- How will I be assessed?
- Assessment is in different styles, such as assignments, a project and presentations. The emphasis is on practical work, although written work is required. The work is graded into pass, merit and distinction. In order to achieve the certificate you are required to pass all areas of the course.
- Where next?
- If you gain a merit or distinction on this Level 1 introductory course and have good attendance, we hope that in September 2010 you will progress to the full-time Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Art and Design. If you decide that you would like to progress in another direction you might consider other Level 2 courses offered at West Thames College.
