Factsheet

Who is This Course For?
School leavers; young people who have recently arrived in the UK from abroad, including asylum seekers and refugees; and students who would benefit from an additional level of support in reaching their potential. The programme is also suitable for young people with learning difficulties where special provision may be made to support the student according to their individual needs.
Entry Requirements
You do not need any formal qualifications but you must have an interest in beauty therapy. You will have an initial assessment at the college and you must have diagnostic Entry 3 or above.
About the course

You will learn through a variety of activities in the class and also through work experience in the college salons.

You will study the following subjects at Level 1:

  • Setting up the beauty therapy work area
  • Facial treatments and skin care
  • Makeup
  • Face painting
  • Nail care treatments
  • Nail art
  • Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
  • Support the health and safety of the salon
  • Introduction to beauty therapy treatments
  • Reception.

You will have a personal tutor to guide and support you through the course. A weekly tutorial allows you and your tutor to develop individual learning plans that will assist in learning and in developing responsibility for your own learning.

Additional Opportunities
There will be opportunities to join other groups of hair and beauty students on educational visits and in-house professional training, and there will be competition work. These activities may incur extra costs.
How will I be assessed?

You will work toward the NVQ Level 1 qualification in beauty therapy through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians.

The programme is unit based and is delivered individually at different stages throughout the course. You will be assessed when you feel you are competent. There are three areas of assessment:

  • Practical: you carry out the skill
  • Oral: you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skill
  • Written: a portfolio of evidence or a written test or an assignment, depending on the unit.
Where next?
You may go on to work as an assistant or receptionist in a beauty salon, and/or progress to other courses such as NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy.
