Destination Customer Service for the Travel Industry

Destination courses are for more advanced ESOL students and consist of about 50% English and 50% vocational study. You will study English with Customer Service and Ticketing at Level 1. There may be work placement opportunities.

Timetable: You will study 13 hours per week. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

Fees:

Home fee for 2012-13 To be confirmed including tuition and exam fees. Students aged 19+ will pay college registration and materials fees.

The course may be free if you are:

  • aged under 19
  • aged 19+ and in receipt of an active benefit (eg JSA or ESA)
  • aged 19+, unemployed and in receipt of a means-tested benefit (eg income support), and you are doing this course to improve your employment prospects
  • aged 19-23, have not taken this course before, don't already have a Level 2 qualification and aim to progress to Level 2.

Who is this course for?
Adults whose first language is not English, who want to improve their English and develop new vocational skills in ticketing and tourism. The course combines language learning with practical skills in order to build your confidence and prepare you for further training and employment.
Entry requirements
You do not need to have any previous qualifications in ticketing and tourism. You will need to be able to demonstrate language and literary skills at Entry Level 3. You will be interviewed before you enrol on the course, and you will have a written assessment to establish your level of language and maths skills. About the course

You will study:

  • Customer Service (NVQ Level 1) in a travel agency context. This will include preparation for good customer service, communicating effectively with customers, dealing with customer queries, requests and problems and maintaining a positive and friendly attitude.
  • Worldwide airfares training (WAFT 1). You will learn to calculate routes and airfares, issue tickets, and use the reservation system used by major airlines. You will also study fare construction, travel geography, itinerary design, airline ticketing and international airfare construction using first, business class and economy tickets.
  • English: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The course also includes IT skills.

You will have a group tutorial every week. Your tutor will support you throughout the course and ensure that your learning needs are met.

Additional opportunities
If you attend class regularly and reach the required level of proficiency, you may be offered work experience.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is continuous throughout the course and you will build up a portfolio of work leading to an NVQ Level 1 in Customer Service. You will also work towards Skills for Life ESOL and numeracy exams. For Worldwide Airfares and Ticketing Level 1 you must pass an “open book” examination.
Where next?
You will be encouraged to develop your own learning plans for the future and you will have the opportunity to get advice from careers advisers and other agencies. When you complete this course you may wish to go into employment or on to further study.
