Childcare and Education - CACHE Level 2 Award / Certificate / Diploma

You will look at what affects children’s education, health and social well-being and how their needs are met. Units include the physical care and development of the child, preparing for employment with young children and their emotional development. Three days each week are spent in college and two days in a practical placement.

Timetable: Three days each week are spent in college and two days in a practical placement. College hours are 9am to 4.40pm and placement hours are 8.30am to 4pm.

Fees:

Home fee for 2010-11 £1301. In addition to the course fee, you will also need to pay a college registration fee, exam fee and materials charge.

Who is This Course For?
Those who wish to work in a supporting role with babies and young children. Men are under-represented on the course and encouraged to apply. The course welcomes mature students.
Entry Requirements

You need to have 2 or more GCSEs at grade D or above (one must be in English), OR a merit or distinction in a relevant course at Level 1. You must also have a commitment to caring for children and a good reference. You will be given an entry test and have a personal interview with the course tutor.

All students must undertake work experience in a childcare setting as part of this course. Work placement settings require students to obtain an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure to demonstrate that they are suitable to work with vulnerable people and/or children. Students must be aware that if information about previous criminal convictions, cautions or warnings is contained on their disclosure certificate they may not be accepted on to a placement. About the course

You will usually be in a class of about 20 and will work in groups on projects as well as individually. 

Units include:

  • An introduction to working with children
  • The developing child
  • Safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children
  • Children and play
  • Communication and professional skills
  • The practitioner in the workplace.

Optional units include:

  • Working with children aged 0-5.
Additional Opportunities
The course is built around practical work placements in nursery classes, day nurseries and infant schools.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by examination and by passing written assignments related to the units you are taught. You will need to complete a practice evidence record and professional evidence diaries plus your placement reports. Attendance at work placement and college needs to comply with CACHE requirements.
Where next?

If you achieve a Merit or Distinction on the Level 2 Certificate and have a satisfactory reference from your tutor, you can progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Childcare.
