Mobile Technology - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

This two-year course (equivalent to 3 A Levels) provides a combination of IT knowledge and practical skills to meet the ever changing technological demands of industry. You will study core units in the first year, then specialise in Mobile Communications Technology in the second year.

Timetable: This is a full time programme of study of under 16 hours per week. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

Start Date: September 2013

Fees: The course may be free if you are:
  • aged under 19
  • aged 19-23 and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification
  • aged 19-24 and have Additional Learning Support needs over £6,000.
If you are 19-23 and already have a Level 3 qualification, you will pay 50% of the course fees plus registration and exam fees.
If you are over 24 years you may be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.

Who is this course for?
For advanced students who are interested in a career in mobile communications and telecommunications technology.
Entry requirements

You should have at least 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including maths and English language, or a relevant Level 2 qualification with a merit (or equivalent) including functional skills in English and maths. You will take an aptitude assessment to establish your suitability for the course. Acceptance onto the course is conditional on meeting the following criteria: entry qualifications, interview and aptitude assessment. About the course

You will study common core units in Year 1 including:

  • Communication and employability skills for IT
  • Computer systems
  • Information systems
  • IT systems analysis and design
  • Principles of software design and development
  • Maintaining computer systems
  • Computer networks.

In the second year you will create large projects for the mobile communication industry. You will create mobile applications on different platforms using event driven programming, object oriented programming and procedural programming, and you will create mobile websites through web server scripting and website production. You will also study project management and mobile security.

This course consists of the 90-credit Diploma in Year 1 followed by the Extended Diploma in Year 2.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by means of a portfolio or internal set assignments and external examinations, depending on the unit.
