- This course is suitable for anyone, regardless of education or background, who wishes to develop their competence in computer skills.
- Entry Requirements
- ECDL Essentials is a natural progression from the IT Foundations course as it extends the knowledge gained. You will complete an initial assessment prior to enrolment to ensure you have the necessary knowledge for this course.
- About the course
ECDL Essentials is designed to cover the key concepts of IT user skills. To achieve the Level 1 award you will need to demonstrate competence in 3 modules:
- IT security for users (Level 1)
- Using the computer and managing files (IT User Fundamentals Level 1)
- Web browsing and communication / using the internet and email.
IT security for users includes:
- Day-to-day security risks and the laws and guidelines that affect the use of IT
- Appropriate methods to protect software and data from unauthorised use or malicious attack and to ensure the integrity of hardware.
Using the computer and managing files includes:
- How to use the basic functions of the computer operating system to adjust system settings and user interface features, access system help functions, view basic system information, and organise and store files and folders on appropriate storage media so that information is easy to find and retrieve
- How to work safely and minimise physical stress
- How to minimise risks from computer viruses and to keep information secure
- How to perform routine maintenance to IT systems
- How to handle routine IT problems.
Web browsing and communication includes:
- Appropriate connection methods to access the Internet
- Making the best use of browser software tools and techniques to search for, retrieve and exchange information using a browser or public search engine
- Making the best use of email software tools and techniques to send, receive, organise and store messages
- Safety, security and respect for others when working online.
- How will I be assessed?
All three modules will be assessed by British Computer Society set assignments. You will be entered for the tests by your tutor, with opportunities to prepare through practice assignments. Duration for each module is 45 minutes.
- Where next?
- When you have successfully completed the course, you could choose to progress to ECDL Extra which will allow you to gain the full ECDL qualification.
