Painting and Decorating - City & Guilds CAA Diploma

This course is held at the Feltham Skills Centre and covers all aspects of painting and decorating including preparing surfaces, working efficiently, applying wallpapers and basic specialist paint finishes. The course includes trips and visits and provides a good basis for further study or to start work.

Qualification: City & Guild CAA Level 1 or Level 2 Diploma

Level: Level 1-2

Mode: Full-time

Timetable: This is a full time programme of study of under 16 hours per week. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

Start Date: September 2013

Fees:

Home fee for 2012-13 £1510 including tuition and exam fees. You will also need to purchase a kit. Students aged 19+ will pay college registration and materials fees.

The course may be free if you are:

  • aged under 19
  • aged 19+ and in receipt of an active benefit (eg JSA or ESA)
  • aged 19+, unemployed and in receipt of a means-tested benefit (eg income support), and you are doing this course to improve your employment prospects
  • aged 19+ and don't already have a Level 2 qualification.

Students interested in a career as a painter and decorator.
Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for Level 1 but you will have an interview and an initial assessment. You must have completed Level 1 before progressing to the Level 2 Diploma. If you need advice before you apply, please call 020 8326 2020 or email ciag@west-thames.ac.uk.

Your studies will include:

  • Storage of materials and equipment
  • Erecting and dismantling basic working platforms
  • Working efficiently
  • Preparing the work area for operations
  • Preparing surfaces for decoration
  • Applying paint materials by brush and roller
  • Applying standard wallpapers to non-complex areas
  • Applying basic specialist paint finishes.
Additional opportunities
There may be an opportunity to visit other sites and the Building Exhibition.
How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed through a combination of practical projects, written assignments and written tests. You will also have to complete a phase test and two multi-choice papers and provide work-based evidence.
Where next?
NVQ Level 2 or Level 3, or find employment or an apprenticeship.
