Manufacturing - Level 2 BTEC Diploma (formerly First Diploma)

This course will enable you to develop your knowledge of engineering materials, design and processes, graphical communication including CAD, science and maths, engineering in society and the environment. You will learn about electrical and electronic principles and engineering maths. You will work on design projects with local industry and go on visits to see engineering at work. The course is equivalent to 4 GCSES at A*-C and provides a good basis to go on to further qualifications.

Timetable: This is a full-time course. You will attend college for three to five days per week, Monday to Friday, usually between 9am and 5pm. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

Start Date: 6 September 2010, 7 September 2010

Fees:

Home fee for 2010-11 £1265. In addition to the course fee, you will also need to pay an exams fee and materials charge.

Who is This Course For?
Students who wish to pursue a career in engineering or progress to advanced courses in engineering.
Entry Requirements
You should usually have 3 or more GCSEs at grade D including English and Maths plus Science or Technology, or a Merit or Distinction in a relevant subject at Level 1. Previous practical workshop experience is preferred.
About the course

You will study the following units:

  • Working practices in engineering
  • Using and interpreting engineering information
  • Applied electrical and mechanical science for technicians
  • Mathematics for engineering technicians
  • Using computer aided drawing techniques in engineering
  • Using secondary machining techniques
  • Programming CNC machines
  • Application of welding processes.

You will develop your knowledge of engineering materials, design and processes, graphical communication including CAD, science and maths, and engineering in society and the environment. You can study electrical and electronic principles and engineering mathematics, and work on design projects with local industry.

You will have a personal tutor who can give you advice on any problems you have during your course, whether academic or personal. You will also have access to the college's full range of support services.

Additional Opportunities
Industrial visits will give you a chance to see the types of work engineers do, so that you can think about what type of engineering career you might be interested in.

Assessment will be based on your portfolio.
Where next?
You can progress to the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering, or start work and take an NVQ.
