Who is this course for?

Adults whose first language is not English, who want to improve their English, numeracy and gain basic knowledge and skills in health and social care or childcare. This course combines language learning with practical activities in order to build your confidence and prepare you for further training, a Level 2 course in Health and Social Care or Childcare, or a Level 2 apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

You do not need to have any previous qualifications in health or social care or childcare, but you should be able to give reasons for wanting to work in health and social care or with children. You also need to be at Entry 3 in English (reading, writing, speaking and listening). You will be interviewed before you enrol on the course, and you will have a written assessment to establish your level of language skills. You will be required to complete a DBS check in order to attend your work placement when you enrol on the course. If you need advice before you apply, please call 020 8326 2020 or email ciag@west-thames.ac.uk.

About the course

Additional opportunities
The course includes work experience but this is subject to suitability. This is a valuable opportunity to put the skills and knowledge you learn on the course into practice.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is continuous throughout the course and you will build a portfolio of work by completing assignments leading to the Level 1 Certificate in Health and Social Care or Certificate in Childcare. Throughout the year, you will take part in group discussion, spoken presentations, basic written assignments and practical exercises on the computer in order to help you prepare for your Skills for Life examinations.
Where next?

“The ESOL [English for speakers of other languages] course is great for me as it has helped me to improve my reading and writing skills as well as my vocabulary. The teachers are friendly and really look after you – they’re so lovely! I’m much more confident and sociable now and have the belief in myself to go on to my Science GCSEs and A Levels before eventually attending university, where I hope to one day study business management.”
