ESOL Threshold for 16-18s

This exciting programme is designed to help you develop your English language skills, enabling you to progress to further vocational or academic courses by combining language learning with practical activities and the development of personal and life skills.

Key course features

Qualification: Trinity ESOL Skills for Life and City & Guilds Numeracy

Level: Entry 1- Level 2

Mode: Full-time

Timetable: This is a full-time course. You will attend college for 15 or 18 hours a week, usually on four days per week between 9am and 5pm. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

Start Date: Courses start in September, but you can enrol at other times during the academic year if places are available.

Fees:

This course is free for eligible students under 19 years.

Who is This Course For?
Bilingual young people who have recently arrived in the UK from abroad (including asylum seekers and refugees) or have spent a short time in an English school but have few qualifications.
Entry Requirements
You do not need any qualifications for this course. You will have an initial assessment to establish your level of English and an initial maths assessment. You will also have an interview to find out about your previous educational experience and your hopes for the future, and to give you a chance to ask questions and discuss the possibility of following a vocational or academic pathway.
About the course

You will develop your English and study skills in the context of Geography, History, Science, Maths and IT. You will also learn about citizenship and receive a general introduction to life in Britain. You will have weekly tutorials and you will receive advice on careers and further courses.

Higher level students can also choose from the following courses:

  • BTEC Introductory Certificate in Vocational Studies
  • ESOL ICT (City & Guilds Certificate for IT Users)
  • Pre GCSE Humanities
  • Pre GCSE Science.

One of the main features of the programme is an emphasis on pastoral support and looking after the individual needs of students, and we have a welfare officer to give you advice on housing, benefits, and finding a doctor or solicitor.

Additional Opportunities
You will go on trips to local places of interest throughout the year and have the opportunity to participate in a range of enrichment activities.
How will I be assessed?
You will take externally recognised Skills for Life exams in English and Maths at the appropriate level. Higher level students will prepare for additional qualifications relevant to the course.
Where next?
When you are ready you can go on to higher vocational or academic qualifications at the college, or move directly into employment if you wish.
