Factsheet

Who is This Course For?
Students who are interested in the performing arts, particularly in one of the three pathways: drama, dance, and/or music.
Entry Requirements
You should have completed an entry level course or have GCSEs at grades E-G, and have an interest in the performing arts. You will be given an initial assessment by the college.
About the course

You will study core units including learning about how the performing arts industry works and the skills you will need to work in it, plus communications and numeracy. The course offers you a choice of three pathways which will be confirmed at enrolment:

  • Drama
  • Music
  • Dance.

Each pathway has a range of specialist units to give you practical skills including drama, dance, stage craft, and computer music production. At some points during the year when productions are scheduled, you will need to be in college for extra sessions to rehearse.

There is a strong tutorial package and additional support is available to help with your studies.

Additional Opportunities
As part of the course we encourage and organise group visits to a range of venues including professional theatre and dance companies. In recent years students have visited media training companies and have danced on the stage at Sadler’s Wells as part of a dance assignment.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is through assignment based work. The emphasis is on practical performance, although there is a certain amount of written work required. The work is graded into pass, merit and distinction. In order to achieve the diploma you are required to pass all areas of the course.
Where next?
When you complete this course you can go on to a Level 2 BTEC Diploma. Because this is an introductory course it will not normally lead directly into professional performance work.
How to apply?
Please apply online for courses starting in 2010.
