Music Performance and Practice - Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma (formerly National Diploma)

This two-year practical course (equivalent to 3 A Levels) aims to develop your music practice and performance skills enabling you to develop a successful career as a musician. You will be based in our brand new Music and Media Centre using the latest digital equipment. Modules include: music performance session styles and techniques, arranging music, modern music in practice, improvising music, sequencing, composing music, music production, sound recording techniques and the sound and music industry. You will perform at a variety of venues and events and you will build a strong portfolio through the use of music software, culminating in the production of a music CD.

Mode: Full-time

Timetable: This is a full-time course. You will attend college for three to five days per week, Monday to Friday, usually between 9am and 5pm. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

To be confirmed. In addition to your course fee you will need to pay and exam fee abd materials charge. This course may be free if you are: aged under 19 years; in receipt of a means tested benefit; aged 19+ and don't already have a Level 2 qualification; aged 19-25 and this course would be your first Level 3 qualification. Adults aged 19-25 may also qualify for free tuition if this is their first full Level 3 qualification.

International Fees: £4750 (International fee for 2009-10) for 1 year of study.

Who is This Course For?
Those who wish to develop a career in music.
Entry Requirements
You should usually have at least 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including Music, or a Merit or Distinction in a relevant subject at Level 2. You must have proven performance/instrument skills (grade 3 or higher). If you don’t have standard music grades your abilities can be assessed through the audition at your interview.
About the course

This highly practical course aims to develop your music practice and performance skills, enabling you to develop a successful career in music. You will be based in our brand new Music and Media Centre using the latest digital equipment.

Modules include:

  • music performance session styles and techniques
  • arranging music
  • modern music in practice
  • improvising music
  • sequencing
  • composing music
  • music production
  • sound recording techniques
  • the sound and music industry.

We provide multi-disciplinary peripatetic instrument teaching for drums, guitar, keyboards, bass and vocals within our studio complexes. You are, however, expected to continue your instrumental tuition outside the college and bring your own instrument to sessions.

By the end of the course you will have performed in our brand new state-of-the-art theatre and at a variety of venues outside the college, culminating in the creation and promotion of a substantial music event. You will have also developed a strong portfolio of compositions and arrangements for a variety of ensembles through the use of music software, culminating in the production of a music portfolio CD.

How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed through assignment based projects.
Where next?
You may progress to the Music Technology Foundation Degree at West Thames College or a degree course at university in music, music technology or music management or another related subject, or you can find work in the music industry.
