Adult Life Skills - Skills for Working Life

This programme is for young people with mild or moderate learning difficulties. It is individually designed to help students achieve their potential, both educationally and socially, and to help them to make the transition on to a mainstream vocational course, training or employment. Students are encouraged to develop a range of personal and vocational skills.

Key course features

Qualification: Edexcel Skills for Working Life and basic skills qualifications

Level: Entry or Level 1

Mode: Full-time

Timetable: This is a full-time course. You will attend college for three to five days per week, Monday to Friday, usually between 9am and 5pm. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

Start Date: September 2010

Students who would benefit from an additional level of support to make the transition from school to an adult environment.

  • Literacy – City and Guilds qualification
  • Numeracy – City and Guilds qualification
  • Information technology
  • Vocational preparation
  • Work experience – 2 week block
  • Residential experience.

In addition, students can learn through a range of modules in any of the following subjects:

  • Art and design
  • Catering
  • Ceramics
  • Computer aided design
  • Craft, design and technology
  • Engineering
  • Fitness training
  • IT
  • Photography.

Since each student has differing needs, the course content is arranged accordingly. The programme places emphasis on developing a student’s communication, numeracy and interpersonal skills, decision making and problem solving abilities, in addition to skills relevant to their vocational interests.

All students have a personal tutor to guide and support them through the course. Great care is taken to plan a course of study to suit each student’s interests and capabilities. The Connexions service plays an active part in planning for progression routes.

Additional Opportunities

Supported learning courses have a varied and stimulating enrichment programme, including local visits using public transport, sport and social opportunities, and a coffee shop run by supported learning students. This course includes a 2 week block of work experience and a residential trip.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is a mutual process. The student and tutor will work together to set learning targets, develop an individual learning plan, and monitor the student’s achievements. Regular reports on progress are made to parents/guardians.
Where next?
You can go on to a mainstream college course or the Work Step Programme. Training or employment are other options.
