Life Skills - Entry to Vocational Education

This flexible course is for young people with moderate or specific learning difficulties. Students are encouraged to develop communication, numeracy and interpersonal skills, decision making and problem solving abilities. They will study vocational subjects including art and design, IT, catering, photography, ceramics, fitness training, engineering and construction. Work experience and a residential experience are an important part of the course.

Timetable: This is a full time programme of study of under 16 hours per week. You will receive your timetable when you enrol.

Who is this course for?
Young people with mild or moderate learning difficulties who would benefit from support to help make the transition from school to an adult environment.

About the course
  • Edexcel entry qualification in personal and social development
  • City and Guilds qualification in functional skills English
  • City and Guilds qualification in functional skills Maths
  • Information technology
  • Vocational preparation
  • Work experience – 2 week block
  • Residential experience.

In addition, students can learn through a range of modules in any of the following subjects:

  • Art and design
  • Catering
  • 3D design
  • Photoshop
  • Enterprise
  • Fitness training
  • IT
  • Photography.

Since each student has differing needs, the course content is arranged accordingly. The programme places emphasis on developing a student’s communication, numeracy and interpersonal skills, decision making and problem solving abilities, in addition to skills relevant to their vocational interests. All students have a personal tutor to guide and support them through the course. Great care is taken to plan a course of study to suit each student’s interests and capabilities. The Connexions service plays an active part in planning for progression routes.

Additional opportunities

Supported learning courses have a varied and stimulating enrichment programme, including local visits using public transport, sport and social opportunities, and a coffee shop run by supported learning students. This course also includes a residential trip to an activity centre.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is a mutual process. The student and tutor will work together to set learning targets, develop an individual learning plan, and monitor the student’s achievements. Regular reports on progress are made to parents/guardians.
Where next?
You may go on to a mainstream Foundation Level course at the college or the Adult Life Skills: Skills for Working Life supported learning course. Training or employment are other options.
