HND Specialist Makeup students, Tamara Ramsey-Crockett and Emma Moore have continued West Thames College’s incredible record at the International Makeup Artist Trade Show (IMATS) by taking first and second prize in the student competition.
Held at Alexandra Palace on 30-31 January, IMATS – the most significant annual event for the industry – brings together specialists and industry professionals from the world of stage and screen, including Oscar and BAFTA winners, to showcase the latest makeup techniques.
Only eight students from around the world were shortlisted from hundreds of entrants to perform in the student competition. Four out of the eight entrants were West Thames students, which goes to show that West Thames College is undoubtedly the best place in the world to study specialist makeup!
The theme for the Beauty / Fantasy section was Alice in Wonderland, inspired by film director Tim Burton's re-imagining of the classic story. Contestants were given two hours to complete their designs. The competition was judged on technique, the application of makeup and the creativity of design.
Talented Tamara, who graduated from the college last summer, took the show by storm gaining first prize with her stunning creation and ensuring a fourth victory in a row at the event for West Thames College. “I’m still so happy to have won and really excited about the opportunities this may bring,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my former classmates and lecturers and I’m also really grateful to my model Elena who was awesome!”
Second place Emma, currently in her second year of the HND Specialist Makeup course at the college, was equally thrilled. “It’s amazing to be in the top three as the competition was really tough,” she said. “My model Melissa was so patient throughout the day and I’m ecstatic that we managed to place so highly.”
As a reward for her success, winner Tamara received $1000 cash plus a goody bag full of the latest makeup for film and stage. She will also now compete at the Beauty International Event in Düsseldorf, Germany, and has been invited to a university in Nigeria to give a talk to budding makeup students.
