ESOL Students Learn On-The-Go

eGo - English on the Go

Earlier this year West Thames College embarked upon an exciting cutting-edge experiment in teaching and learning. In January 2010 the College launched eGo (English on the Go), a project designed to enable ESOL learners to improve their English and literacy skills outside of the classroom.

Having won a bid for funding from MoLeNet to provide the technology, five ESOL groups were issued mobile phones and encouraged to explore a range of language-based tasks including:

  • Taking pictures on college trips and writing about the events in collaborative group work
  • Creating personalised picture dictionaries
  • Using the internet to improve their vocabulary, reading and research skills.

Students said that using mobile phones had encouraged teamwork, as well as motivating them to generate their own resources and take control of their learning.
