Mervyn’s Flying High

First Diploma in Sport student, Mervyn Glover is a member of St Mary’s Richmond Athletic Club and competes in events throughout the UK. In 2009 he won the SEAA Indoor Individual Championships and became the UK (under-17s) High Jump Champion.
“I’ve always loved playing sports, which is the reason I ended up studying the First Diploma at West Thames College. Basketball, football, tennis – you name it and I’ll either be watching it or playing it! I started to focus on the High Jump after discovering I had a talent for it at school. I was jumping 1.70 metres by Year 9 and now have a personal best of 2 metres.
“My coach was really proud of my achievements in 2009 but, as always, he’s pushing me to go higher. I’d love to be an Olympic athlete one day and also hope to smash Javier Sotomayor’s high jump world record!”
