This highly practical two-year course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and will give you a broad foundation in dance. It makes use of the college's modern theatre, performance spaces, changing rooms and costume store, and focuses on styles such as ballet, contemporary, jazz and street dance. There will also be intensive workshops on a range of performance subjects. You will study the craft of choreography and physical theatre in relation to your production projects and performances. You will also cover the theoretical, social, historical and administrative side of dance.
About the Course
The course combines both practical assignments and the study of a variety of dance styles, leading to a series of production projects in the drama studio and at external venues. You will usually be in a class of 16-20 students and will work on group projects as well as individual assignments. In the second year you will produce a final major project.
You will study:
- Contemporary dance techniques (Release, Limon, Cunningham-based, Graham-based)
- Jazz dance
- Urban dance styles
- Performance workshop
- Dance in context
- Choreographic principles
- Health and body maintenance
- Dance performance
- Safe practice
- Theoretical, social, historical and administrative aspects of dance.
At some points in the year when productions are scheduled, you will need to be in college for extra sessions to rehearse.
You will use the college's modern theatre, performance spaces, changing rooms and costume store, and your student learning adviser will guide and support you throughout your course. In the second year you will receive guidance for applications to university.
You can go on to an HND in Dance at West Thames College, a BA (Hons) degree at university or find employment in the dance or related disciplines.
We encourage your active involvement in the assessment process, which is continuous throughout the year and culminates in a final major project. Reports on your progress will be prepared twice a year.
