This course will enable you to develop skills in caring within the health and social care sector, including communication, individual rights and individual needs, cultural diversity, anatomy and physiology and human lifespan development. Work experience forms a mandatory part of the course. A merit or distinction in the Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A*-D and provides a good basis to go on to further qualifications, such as the BTEC Level 3 Diploma.

  • About the Course

    The Level 2 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care have been designed to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding essential to the health and social care sector. Supporting progression to further learning or the workplace, learners can progress to the Level 3 Certificate and Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, further learning at Level 3 and above, or assist with progression into the workplace.

    You will study the following mandatory units:

    • Human lifespan development
    • Health and social care values
    • Effective communication in health and social care
    • Equality and diversity in health and social care
    • Individual rights in health and social care
    • Healthy living
    • Carrying out a research project in health and social care.

    Optional units may include:

    • Human body systems and care of disorders
    • Vocational experience
    • Creative and therapeutic activities in health and social care
    • Social influences on health and wellbeing
    • The impact of nutrition on health and wellbeing.
  • Entry Requirements

    2 or more GCSEs at grade D / grade 3 or above including English language or Level 1 Functional Skills English, or successful completion of a Foundation Level course with functional skills in English and maths.     All students must undertake work experience in a care/childcare setting as part of this course. Work placement settings require students to obtain a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) enhanced check to demonstrate that they are suitable to work with vulnerable people and/or children.

  • Progression

    You may progress to the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care if you achieve a merit or above and ideally Functional Skills Level 2 in English, or you may wish to do apprenticeship.

    This qualification doesn't provide a licence to practise, but may support prograssion into a range of job roles in the health and care sector including:

    • Care support workers in adult residential settings
    • Healthcare assistants in community, primary care and acute health environments
    • Care support workers in domiciliary services, supported living or day services
    • Community-based support workers.
  • Assessment Method

    Throughout the year you will be given written assignments for each unit and work placement reports. The units "Human lifespan development" and "Healthy living" will be externally assessed.
