This one year intensive higher education course enables you to develop awareness of the makeup industry, learn the technical skills required to work as a specialist hair and makeup artist and have the opportunity to work with a professional photographer. The course focuses on working in fashion and live performance, including aspects of the film and television industry. You will study current trends, period makeup and hair, body painting and special effects, as well as theory based units to give you a well rounded foundation to enter employment.

Progression
The HNC equips the graduate with the skills and knowledge required for a career path into the fashion, film, television, media and retail industries as a makeup artist, a special effects makeup artist, a wig or makeup designer.
Recent graduates of West Thames have worked as freelance makeup artists for BBC productions such as Waking the Dead, The Crown, Emma and Strictly Come Dancing and films including Harry Potter, Call the Midwife and Cinderella. Graduates have found work as Wig assistants at the English National Opera, the Royal Opera House and the National Theatre, and for West End theatre productions such as Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, Billy Elliott and Dirty Dancing, Prince of Egypt. Graduates have become successful retail makeup artists for top cosmetics companies such as MAC, Bobbi Brown and Illamasqua Cosmetics.
West Thames students have also won prestigious international makeup artist competitions.
