West Thames College is delighted to be partnering with the University of West London to offer degree apprenticeships for the first time. Two new Level 6 Degree Apprenticeships; the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship and the Digital Technology Solutions Manager Degree Apprenticeship were launched last month in front of an audience of local employers and academics.

Attendees were welcomed to the event by the Vice-Chancellor of UWL Professor Peter John. Mandy Crawford-Lee from the Universities Vocational Awards Council (UVAC) enthused about the increasing number of professions seeking to develop degree apprenticeships. Alison Cox from the Chartered Management Institute talked about the process of designing the programmes, which involved businesses of all sizes as well as universities. She was followed by West Thames College Apprenticeships Manager, Adam Sage, who went into more detail about the apprenticeship levy and how employers can make the most of it.

From September 2016 West Thames College will be offering the BA (Hons) Chartered Manager Degree for students who want to work in a variety of business management roles including strategic management, project management, HR or finance and the BSC (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions Degree for students who are looking to work in information systems, IT project management, network infrastructure and cyber security.

As with all apprenticeships, apprentice undergraduates will be employed whilst studying a full honours Degree. UWL will deliver the knowledge based aspects of the qualification with the college delivering the work-based observations and assessments.

The college is also working with UWL to explore additional Level 5 Degree Apprenticeships in other subject disciplines with a view to enrolling students in September 2017. Those areas include:

  • Nursing
  • Aviation Operations Manager
  • Transport Manager
  • Hotel Manager Degree
  • Early Years Educator
  • Civil and Built Environment.

All of the degree programmes are being designed with local students in mind, offering them progression and the opportunity to live, work and get a degree in West London.
