West Thames College recently hosted a successful Understanding Logistics event at its Skills + Logistics Centre in Feltham, bringing together local employers, government representatives and students to explore the diverse and rapidly growing opportunities in the logistics and supply chain sector.
The event welcomed leading organisations including the National Institute of Couriers, TVS Supply Chain Solutions, Royal Mail, Evri, SBL Couriers, and RIF Group, alongside representatives from the London Borough of Hounslow. Together, they collaborated with West Thames College students to highlight career pathways in an industry that plays a vital role in both the local and national economy.
The day provided students with first-hand insight into the breadth of roles available, from entry-level positions through to management and specialist careers. Through conversations with employers, demonstrations and an outdoor vehicle showcase, learners gained a deeper understanding of how the sector operates and the skills needed to succeed.
Opening the event, West Thames College CEO and Principal Marta Gajewska explained:
“Logistics is all about thousands and thousands of people working behind the scenes to make the world move.”
She also emphasised the scale and importance of the sector, encouraging students to explore the opportunities it offers:
“What you’re missing out on if you’re not looking at jobs in logistics is a sector that offers fantastic opportunities, from apprenticeships through to senior management roles.”
The event demonstrated how logistics is one of the UK’s fastest growing industries, employing millions of people and contributing significantly to the economy. In west London in particular, the sector is a major employer, reflecting the region’s strong transport links and proximity to Heathrow Airport.
Carl Lomas MBE, Chair of the National Institute of Couriers, also spoke to students about the wide range of roles available locally. Highlighting the unique position of the area, he said:
“Heathrow, Hounslow, Isleworth, Feltham – this is the heartland of logistics, rich in jobs and well paid.”
Encouraging students to explore the opportunities on offer, he added:
“Do you want to manage these operations, drive these vehicles or get involved in the technology behind them? Get involved – these jobs are here today.”
Students were particularly engaged by the hands-on experience of seeing electric and gas-powered vehicles, as well as specialist delivery equipment. Employers showcased innovations in sustainable logistics, underlining the sector’s commitment to reducing environmental impact and embracing new technology.
The event demonstrated the importance of collaboration between education and industry in addressing skills shortages and supporting local economic growth. By connecting students with employers and real-world experiences, West Thames College continues to play a key role in preparing learners for high-demand careers.
