Health and Care students at West Thames College can now get help to boost their IT Skills!

Devised by Imran Khattak, the college’s lead for Digital Resources and Information Literacy, the Learning Resource Centre offers a scheme whereby any Higher Education student or mature learner can receive free training in IT Skills, English Language, Numeracy and general Study Skills.

Whilst mature learners in the college are some of the most enthusiastic, they often face barriers to learning such as insufficient IT Skills and language issues. Others may be returning to study after a long break and need help in learning how to study again. Whatever the situation this Learning Resource Centre programme offers either relevant one-to-one support sessions or group workshops.

Students pictured have benefitted greatly from training in Microsoft Power Point, enabling them to make some great slide show presentations, some for the very first time.

Their Tutor, Deidre Wyler said, “Thanks to Imran’s expertise, they all produced some wonderful creative and inspirational work. My students were so proud of their achievements and they thoroughly enjoyed the session. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful support and guidance from the library staff.”

Students who have benefitted from IT workshops provided as part of the scheme said:

“We didn’t know who to go to for specific IT support, but this service showed us how to use MS EXCEL to represent the data from our practical experiments in several different ways. This is a great scheme.” (Mohammed Khalid, Access to HE Diploma: Radiography)

“Not only did I learn to use MS POWERPOINT for the first time, but I also received some indispensable support with Harvard Referencing. The support from Imran meant that I had the underpinning skills to do well on my course.” Agatha Ntow, (Access to Nursing)

Whilst others commented on how they were supported with English and maths:

”I enjoy my course very much but I was held back by my English. However the support with English and academic writing from Imran made all the difference. Thanks a lot! ” Violeta Norvaisaite, (Access to HE Diploma: Nursing)
